Getting to the truth through fiction
What follows is an excerpt from The Panama Conspiracy by William Penn in which Mr. Abu Amed, an aide to Osama bin Laden, explains the al-Qaeda strategy to Buck Madison, a CIA operative sent by the U.S. President to make personal contact with bin Laden.
…“Between 1973 and 1991,” said Abu Amed, “we decided that a combination of patience and demographics would ultimately enable us to defeat the Israelis. We noted that most Israeli families were practicing birth control. They either have one to three children or choose to sire no children at all. By contrast, our Arab birth rates were soaring. Typically, our families have eight or more children. We are especially pleased that this is so among Arab families living inside Israel who, and I still can’t believe the Jews permit this, have the right to vote for the members of the Iraeli parliament, the Knesset.
“In order to discourage the immigration of more Jews into Israel, we launched what is now known as the First Intifada. The purpose of that was to make life in Israel less attractive to Jews who might want to go there and settle. Our primary weapons were young boys throwing rocks at the Israeli military and police. We assumed that, overtime, a combination of our overwhelming population numbers and our advantage in terms of landmass would cause the United Nations to rethink the action it took in 1948 when it created the State of Israel.
“Unfortunately, we did not anticipate that your President Reagan would trick the Soviet Union into ending the Cold War. Once the Soviet Union could no longer confine the Jews who wanted to emigrate from the Soviet Union and from its former satellites, the flood of Jews pouring into Israel made our demographic strategy obsolete. For the near term, anyway.”
“So, if you can’t defeat Israel with conventional forces and you can’t out-populate the Jews for now, how do you expect to win?” asked Buck.
“When I studied at Cambridge, I became aware of the writings of Captain Sir Basil Liddle-Hart,” said Amed.
“Yes, I like to think of myself as a student of his,” said Buck. “I almost know his Strategy: The Indirect Approach and his The Other Side of the Hill by heart.”
“Then you must know his Eight Maxims of Strategy. If so, then our latest plan to defeat the Jews should be readily apparent to you. Let us just take the first maxim: ‘Adjust your end to your means.’
“As long as Israel has atomic weapons, plus a large standing army and the support of the United States, we do not have the means to defeat the Israeli Defense Force straight away. That being the case, we have had to adjust our end which now is to separate the United States from Israel.”
“Are you telling me that the September 11th attacks, the Second Intifada and our support for Israel are somehow related?”
“Yes, indeed. The attacks of September 11th were designed to teach the American people what terror can be like and to cause them to decide that they do not want any more of it. To prevent more terrorist attacks, you Americans must now inconvenience yourselves with draconian security measures and serious reductions in your precious freedoms. At some point, your people will realize the connection between our terror attacks and America’s support for Israel. Ergo: if you stop supporting Israel, we will stop the terror and your people can go back to the carefree ways they enjoyed prior to September 11th.
Meanwhile, the purpose of the suicide bombers of the Second Intifada against Israel is to provoke the Israelis into imposing brutal measures upon our brothers and sisters inside the West Bank and in Gaza and, thereby, strengthen the resolve of all the Islamic nations to support al-Qaeda and resist the American call to make common cause against Iraq and Iran.”
